Girls Rock Philly seeks a dynamic and task-oriented person to join the organization this Winter as the Community
Organizing Director​. Girls Rock Philly (GRP) is a youth-centered music organization dedicated to building an
intergenerational community of girls, women, and trans and gender non-conforming people. Through the practice
of fearless expression, artistic experimentation, and collaboration, we build the confidence and leadership skills
needed to transform ourselves and our communities. Our staff, volunteers, and participants foster a joyful culture
of creativity, critical thinking, and collective care in order to build a more safe and equitable world. Using a
multi-generational, peer mentoring model, GRP provides music, arts, and media education in the form of
instrument lessons, band creation, original songwriting, and workshops on topics such as media literacy, writing,
self-defense, and confidence building.

 

The Community Organizing Director will be primarily responsible for building relationships outside of the
organization with careful attention to communications and community building efforts. In this role, the Director
will build new partnerships and strengthen existing systems and working groups.
This is a full-time year-round appointment. The Community Organizing Director’s daily schedule varies based on
deadlines, programming, and priorities. Some night and weekend hours are required. The Community Organizing
Director reports to the Girls Rock Philly board of directors, and works closely with the Program Director and the
Operations Manager.

 

The Community Organizing Director’s responsibilities include:

Communications

  • Generates Design and Content for Social Media, Newsletters, Flyers, Camp Roadmaps
  • Manages and updates GRP web presence and related applications
  • Manages Press Inquiries and Interviews
  • Coordinates and compiles GRP Annual Report
  • Coordinates A/V documentation of GRP events, camps and programs
  • Manages Annual Design Partnership
  • Creates and maintains centralized database of GRP Community (Participants, volunteers, etc)

Community​ ​Building​ ​&​ ​Outreach

  • Coordinates community-building events including showcases for LRC, youth camp, and other
    workshops and happenings.
  • Manages community partnerships and seeks out collaborative community events
  • Coordinates volunteers for representing GRP at tabling events
  • Acts as the point person for 3rd party GRP benefits
  • Builds and maintains relationships with area schools and partner programs along with Program
    Director
  • Acts as liaison and point person for the international Girls Rock Camp Alliance (GRCA)
  • Actively participates in Philadelphia’s widespread arts, youth leadership, and social justice
    communities; attending conferences, receptions, workshops and events as available to build
    relationships that support GRP’s programs and increase visibility of GRP.

Social​ ​Justice​ ​/​ ​Programs​ ​Support

  • Coordinates LRC, our rock camp for adults.
  • Creates infrastructure and develops training and resources toward operationalizing social justice
    work at GRP. This includes defining areas of focus and determining success metrics and
    evaluation outcomes.
  • Works closely with Program Director to incorporate social justice work into the Youth Action
    Council program

Volunteer​ ​Support

  • Staff point person for caucus groups, volunteer recruitment & outreach, and GRCA working groups
  • Collaborates with Program Director on Volunteer Trainings
  • Fundraising​ ​&​ ​Development​ ​Support:
  • Management and stewardship of GRP donor database
  • Coordinates logistics of major appeals with support from Operations Manager
  • Coordinates fundraising events with support from Operations Manager & Board.

Other​ ​organizational​ ​duties​ ​as​ ​assigned

  • Participates in regular staff meetings and retreats as well as annual self and peer evaluations
  • Attends occasional board meetings as appropriate
  • Engages in visioning and strategic planning

 

Essential​ ​Qualifications:
● Excellent project management skills, helping to both create and maintain projects, assign tasks when
needed, create project timelines, update progress, and keep team members on track
● Demonstrable commitment to the mission and values of the organization
● Strong leadership and facilitation skills
● Basic graphic design skills and an eye for good design
● Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting deadlines while juggling multiple projects
● Excited by collaboration, but also confident working independently
● Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to effectively and professionally communicate with a diverse,
intergenerational, cross-class, and multi-cultural range of audiences.
● A working knowledge of the youth-organizing landscape and feminist and transgender movements with a
focus on gender, racial, economic, and disability justice, etc.
● Eager and open-minded attitude, including the ability to problem solve as needed.
● Comfortable working closely with colleagues and offering / receiving feedback

Preferred​ ​Qualifications:
● Experience with cultural/community organizing
● Experience working in marketing and communications
● Basic HTML knowledge.
● Photoshop and InDesign experience and knowledge
● WordPress (and other CMS platforms) experience and knowledge
● Knowledge of musical gear

 

Physical​ ​requirements:
● Some light to heavy lifting of musical equipment (up to 50lbs)

 

Strong interest in youth self-empowerment, gender justice, music education and cooperative learning is very encouraged. Due to working closely with minors, Federal and PA state criminal background clearances, as well as PA child abuse clearances, are required for this position

Salary is $40,000/year + health and dental insurance.
