Event: 4th Annual Community-Driven Research Day

December 17, 2013 Category: Method

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is hosting the 4th Annual Community-Driven Research Day on Thursday, January 30th. The event is designed to foster collaborations between community-based organizations, academic researchers and students.

This year’s focus is “Community Approaches to Improving Health Outcomes” and participants in the event will include area nonprofits, community groups, public sector partners, and researchers from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel University and other local academic institutions.

“Community organizations are involved in so many different topic areas, but we all have the same goal of improving health outcomes,” said Ayana Bradshaw, coordinator for Community Driven Research Day. “So we wanted to think about it in terms of community approaches to improving health outcomes which is what these community-based organizations are doing.

At the event, community-based organizations and community groups will highlight their research questions through an interactive session. The participating groups will explain their mission, goals, and major accomplishments, as well as display their questions about community approaches to improving health outcomes.

“The main goal is for the research questions of interest to come from the community-based organizations, and those who are really working on the ground working with communities,” Bradshaw said. “In traditional research, researchers come up with questions of interest, so we’re really trying to focus our efforts more on community-based participatory research, which is a term used to really show that researchers and community organizations and members work as equal partners.”

In addition, there will be a call for funding proposals for grants available to support research partnerships between CBOs who presented at the event and academic researchers.

Submission forms for presentations from community organizations are due January 10th. Non-presenting participants should register by January 17th.
