Temple University Creates Initiative to Help Low-Income Students “Fly in 4”
February 10, 2014 Category: FundingPaying for college can be tough. As a result, many students work off-campus part-time jobs just to pay for their tuition, and therefore, spend less time dedicated to their studies.
Temple University found that students from low- and middle income backgrounds were more likely to spend more than four years in college, partially due to having to work off-campus jobs. Therefore, they rack up thousands more in college debt as they spend an extra semester or year attending college.
Temple University created the Fly in 4 Initiative, an initiative to encourage students to stay dedicated to their studies and get their degree within four years. 500 students from each incoming class will be awarded a $4,000 annual scholarship in exchange for agreeing to work less than 10 hours a week off-campus.
They’ll also agree to meet with an academic advisor at least once a semester. Temple guarantees participants will graduate in four years (as long as they meet all requirements), otherwise Temple will provide the additional classes required free of charge.
