Bottom Dollar Food Opens on 9th and Girard

The discount supermarket chain Bottom Dollar Food opened a new location on 9th and Girard last week. It is the second Bottom Dollar to open on Girard Avenue — the other is on 31st Street — and the 9th to open in Philadelphia since 2011.
The chain, owned by Delhaize America, has locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio, and has expanded aggressively in the Philadelphia-area market over the last few years. Many of its nine locations, including stores in Brewerytown and Germantown, are located in former food deserts.
Though East Girard has other supermarkets, such as the Super Fresh in Northern Liberties, there still seems to be a need for more neighborhood grocery stores along the busy avenue. On opening day, lines formed in the check-outs and throngs of people made their way down the aisles, including a walk-in produce refrigerator. Many of these customers came from the housing developments located near Girard.
The store added 50 jobs to the local economy, according to a press release. Bottom Dollar Food will also make $3,000 in contributions to local nonprofits working on hunger relief. This includes a monthly donation to Sunday Suppers for the remainder of the year and single donation of $1,500 to Gibson Temple Baptist Church to stock its food pantry.
