Asian Arts Initiative‘s latest gallery installation, Corner Store (Take-Out Stories), is a collaboration between Amber Art and Design artists Keir Johnston and Ernel Martinez to use the city corner store as a focal point to explore cross-cultural interactions among Philadelphia’s pan-ethnic black and Asian communities.

On Friday, August 1, Asian Arts Initiative will host a First Friday Open House for the gallery. The Food Trust‘s Healthy Corner Store Initiative will be a special guest at the event.

“Visitors to the exhibition can meet the artists of Corner Store (Take Out Stories) and Food Trust staff from the Healthy Corner Store Initiative to learn what they can do to increase access to healthy food in their communities,” said Kenji Tabery, a project manager for the Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

The Healthy Corner Store Initiative is a program to bring healthier options to corner stores and to motivate youth and adults to purchase healthier items through both classroom education and direct marketing in their corner stores.

“Through the Healthy Corner Store Initiative, The Food Trust, a nationally recognized nonprofit, supports corner store owners who want to increase the healthy food inventory in their stores and help their customers make healthier choices. The Food Trust’s work in corner stores is just one piece of the organization’s comprehensive approach to improving access to the healthy foods necessary to live a healthy life,” Tabery said.
