Memorial Being Held Today for the 151 Homeless that Died in Philadelphia in 2014

December 18, 2014 Category: PeopleUncategorized

Spearheaded by homeless service provider Project HOME, Philadelphia is holding a memorial today at 5:00 pm in Dilworth Park for the 151 homeless men and women who died in the city in 2014.

At the memorial, there will be a ceremonial reading of the names of all 151 persons that died, all of which were homeless or formerly homeless.

The initial announcement counted 149 dead but fresh reports to Project HOME from homeless service providers raised the number, according to Jennine Miller, director of advocacy and public policy at the organization.

Executive Director of Project HOME Sister Mary Scullion and WURD 900AM radio host Derrick Ford, a well-known homeless advocate, will speak at the memorial.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development counted 5,738 homeless in Philadelphia in the January 2014 Point in Time Count. An average 45 die every year, according to the latest Philadelphia Homeless Death Review Report.
