This week in Social Impact Across the U.S.:

The Chronicle of Philanthropy released a series of posts earlier this month examining the future of online giving. The series includes tips and how-to guides, a breakdown of recent trends, and stories on the impact of “take-action buttons” and spam filters on online giving.

In the wake of Baltimore’s recent protests and unrest, the Laura and John Arnold Foundation gave $1.4 million to the Maryland Data Analysis Center, the Philanthropy News Digest reports. The center integrates data from state law enforcement agencies to help better understand trends and to identify areas in need of reform. The goal of the investment, according to a foundation official, is for the data center’s model to be replicated nationally.

In a series of op-eds, the New York Times looks at what it means to be transgender today. The latest op-ed by Ernesto Londono mines the idea of visibility and what it means for transgender people, tracking the long road from obscurity to a modicum of acceptance.

The shareholders of Bunge, a global farm commodity business, are taking their role in corporate governance seriously. They are putting forth a proposal to help curb the company’s contribution to deforestation, Grist.org reports. The proposal asks the company to set “quantitative, time-bound goals for reducing its supply chain impacts on deforestation and related human rights.”
