This study says Pennsylvania is pretty bad at giving
December 10, 2015 Category: PurposeYikes.
According to a recent study from personal finance social network WalletHub, Pennsylvania is the 43rd most charitable state in the nation. The good news? We’re not the worst at anything — but the results aren’t good.
Eight sets of metrics were factored into the data analysis:
- Volunteer rate
- Percentage of donated income
- Percentage of population claiming to have donated time
- Percentage of population claiming to have donated money
- Growth in charitable giving from 2006 to 2012
- Number of charities per capita
- Community service requirement for public high schools
- Number of volunteering hours per capita

There’s a bit of a caveat — WalletHub admits that “charitable behavior isn’t limited to donating money to the needy,” and this particular study was aimed at measuring the magnitude of impact via donation per state.
