Food Connect Group made a web app to collect surplus Super Bowl food

Any half-decent Super Bowl party will be loaded with treats. You’ve got your wings, your salsas and chippies, probably some potato skins, maybe a chili or two (if you’re so lucky) and that one vegan-friendly dish folks seem to pick at out of courtesy.

But what do you do with all the leftovers your guests leave at your home? Food Connect Group, the local startup that helps restaurants and organizations donate surplus foods to homeless shelters, decided to capitalize on the opportunities Sunday’s festivities laid before them with a new function on its website that allows those with extra food to register that food for pickup.

“The work we are doing is so important,” said founder Megha Kulshreshtha. “Fresh food is thrown away daily while people go hungry. This doesn’t make sense. There is a need in our communities to help bridge this gap and Food Connect wants to fill that need as best we can.”

While Kulshreshtha said Food Connect Group didn’t receive as many donations as they’d hoped they would, though they did land two long-term donors through the initiative.

“I think the idea that organizations and people can safely donate their surplus food is still not part of people’s ingrained responses,” she said.

The web app was a cool idea, she said, but for now, “this remains a very on-the-ground, grassroots effort to remind organizations and people that this option exists.”

The Food Connect app will be available in app stores soon, Kulshreshtha said. Interested donors can still use the function on Food Connect Group’s website.
