Cool event alert: A discussion on the future of the ‘politics of food’

What do the futures of feeding Philadelphia’s vulnerable populations look like? How can urban farming fill a void in providing for underserved communities?

These are the points of conversation that will make up two roundtable discussions at City & State PA’s inaugural “Politics of Food” event, taking place next week on Tuesday, July 25 at WHYY headquarters.

In addition to food and drink offerings from local restaurants and breweries, the event will bring in panelists to offer some insight into each of the two topics. The Vulnerable Populations panel, moderated by WHYY’s Katie Colaneri, will feature:

  • Steve Cook, restaurateur and managing partner of CookNSolo restaurant group
  • Ben Miller, cofounder of South Philly Barbacoa
  • Michael Smith, PA executive deputy secretary of agriculture
  • Emma Kornetsky, government affairs manager at Philabundance

For the Urban Farming and Racial Equity panel, moderated by Ann Karlen, executive director of Fair Food, you’ll hear from:

  • Chris Bolden-Newsome, cofounder and co-director at the Farm at Bartam’s Garden
  • Kirtrina Baxter, community organizer at the Public Interest Law Center
  • Lan Dinh, farm manager at VietLead

The event is from 3:30-7:30 p.m. and tickets are $55.
