Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) is seeking a dynamic, creative, and experienced development professional to lead the company’s fundraising efforts as Director of Development. The ideal candidate will play an active and dynamic role in implementing a refreshed mission and new vision for the company.  The candidate will join a team contributing to a strategic plan focused on bold programming, a renewed commitment to developing new work, and broader participation in the national theatre industry.

Position Description

The Director of Development is responsible for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive and strategic fundraising program which will meet and exceed PTC’s goals for contributed revenue. They will provide leadership throughout the organization to ensure that everyone participates in the fundraising process, and they will cultivate new and existing relationships that are critical to the PTC’s long-term success and stability.

The Director of Development is the primary development liaison to the Board of Directors, the Development Committee of the Board and the Chair of the Board; the Managing Director, and the Producing Artistic Director.  They will create a positive, optimistic, and practical fundraising environment, and will ensure that effective systems and procedures are in place for all development functions, including: donor cultivation and recognition, fundraising events, direct mail and online solicitations, delivery of donor benefits, reporting requirements, recording and acknowledging contributions, and prospect research and management.

The Director of Development will be an excellent oral and written communicator.  They will ensure timely and appropriate correspondence with all stakeholders, and will be able to communicate PTC’s mission and vision as a convincing case for support.  They will lead the production of high quality written and electronic requests for support, as well as materials to be used for cultivation and stewardship, and have a proven track record of successful grant funding.

The Director of Development will engage the Director of Marketing in a collaborative relationship that supports the priorities and activities of both the development and marketing functions. They will value data and technology, and be highly motivated to fully mine PTC’s Tessitura database for prospect identification and screening purposes.

The Director of Development will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts, and is also responsible for ensuring that board members, staff leadership and volunteers are fully engaged in the effort as well.  They will be expected to maintain a personal portfolio of donors and personally solicit individuals, corporations and foundations as appropriate.  They will track the progress of PTC’s major donors and prospects through the various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and renewal, ensure that prospect and donor interests and needs are kept in the forefront of PTC concerns, and that, as a result, PTC continually enlarges its family of committed donors and friends.

They will supervise the current development staff, presently consisting of the Associate Director of Development. They will bear responsibility for the creation and tracking of departmental goals and budgets, including expenses.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Development reports to the Managing Director and the Producing Artistic Director, and will also serve as a senior PTC representative in the greater cultural, philanthropic, and professional communities.

Requirements

The Director of Development must have:

  • demonstrated and significant experience in creating, implementing, and evaluating successful fundraising campaigns for a nonprofit institution, preferably with a budget of at least $3M.
  • experience in the cultural community (preferred, but not required). A deep appreciation for theatre is imperative, as is the ability to convey that appreciation in an engaging and conversational manner.
  • proven success in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts.
  • excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with all constituents. They must be an effective motivator and advisor to assist staff and volunteers in their efforts to do the same.
  • the ability to develop, understand, and meet contributed revenue budgets and departmental expense budgets; the ability to analyze trends and make practical projections.
  • experience with donor management systems, preferably Tessitura, and an interest in other current and emerging technologies related to fundraising.
  • knowledge about current giving trends as well as legal and tax-related requirements concerning charitable giving.
  • excellent oral and written communications skills, including a proven track record with successful grant funding.
  • experience producing large-scale donor events (galas, etc.).
  • willingness and ability to attend evening and weekend performances, as well as to attend meetings and events offsite and outside the regular workday.

Compensation

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  PTC also offers medical and dental insurance to its full-time employees.

 

Additional Information

Ideally the start date for the position will be 9/1/19, but this date is flexible.
