Seven Nonprofits to be Awarded for Helping to Build Healthy Communities in Philadelphia

Factors in the community such the accessibility of healthy foods and recreational spaces, safety, and the support of families and social networks play a major role in our health. GSK will be awarding seven local nonprofits with a 2013 GSK IMPACT Award and $40,000 for their efforts in addressing these community health factors. The award ceremony will be on November 2oth at the Atrium of GSK at The Navy Yard.

GSK awards up to 20 nonprofits (10 in the Philadelphia region, 10 in North Carolina) each year with an IMPACT Award–an acronym for the qualities the winners should demonstrate: Innovation, Management, Partnership, Achievement, Community Focus, and Targeting Need. Winners are selected by panel of local and national health experts and senior GSK representatives.

This year’s winners are:

Center in the Park, Inccultivates positive aging for older Philadelphians, the majority of whom are experiencing an aging process exacerbated by poverty and health disparities.

Common Market Philadelphia, Inc. brings healthy, fresh, affordable, and locally-grown food to some of the most under-served communities.

Homeless Advocacy Project  provides free, high-quality legal services to homeless individuals and young people who are aging out of the foster care system. This service helps the recipients access entitlements – a critical funding stream to get off the streets and on the path to self-sufficiency.

Inn Dwelling assists low-income families in the Germantown area of Philadelphia with wrap-around housing, education, and career development support.

Lutheran Settlement House empowers individuals, families, and communities to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency through an integrated program of social, educational, and advocacy services.

Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance (aka: MANNA) prepares and delivers  nourishing meals to individuals at acute nutritional risk due to life-threatening illnesses.

New Kensington Community Development Corporation aims to create safer, greener communities through community improvements and beautification efforts.

The awards will be presented by Deirdre Connelly, President North America Pharmaceuticals, and will be emceed by NBC 10’s Renee Chenault Fattah will emcee.
