Learn to Give: EPIP Philly Hosts Strategic “Personal Philanthropy” Event

Want to think more strategically about your charitable giving? The local chapter of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, known as EPIP Philly, is hosting a low-stakes introduction to personal philanthropy in Center City later this week.

The half-day event, “Plan to Give,” will gather like-minded philanthropists and offer a guide to giving circles — an emerging trend in charitable giving that has quickly gained ground. Representatives from Philadelphia-based groups, such as Asian Mosaic Fund, Impact100 Philadelphia, globalislocal, and the Spruce Foundation will be in attendance.

Each of these organizations represent different kinds of giving circles, but they are generally groups of individual donors that pool their money and together decide on charitable causes to fund.

“Some of our giving can feel haphazard,” said Jenny Weissbourd, an EPIP member who organized the event. “We came up with the idea as a way to offer our existing membership base the opportunity to connect with each other on deeper level and to help participants think about giving in more deliberate and strategic ways.”

EPIP Philly, one of 12 national chapters, hosts events throughout the year and is operated by volunteer members like Weissbourd, whose day job is in development at The Food Trust. The group is actively recruiting new membership.

“We love bringing new people in across all backgrounds,” Weissbourd added. “EPIP prides itself on being a diverse group.”
