Deadline to Register an Organization for the Tire Round-Up Program is June 27

June 25, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

Every year since 1995, the Streets Department’s Sanitation Division has organized a Tire Round Up Program as a way to get rid of illegally discarded tires in communities throughout the city.

The program is designed to remove illegally discarded tires from the city streets, sidewalks, parks, alleys, and riverbanks. Registered volunteers who participate in the program receive a nominal reimbursement for the tires they collect and bring to designated drop-off sites. Participants will be reimbursed 50¢ for each illegally discarded tire brought to one of drop-off sites (listed here). The tire drop-off limit will be 1,000 tires per group.

By properly disposing of illegally discarded tires, the amount of materials that reaches the waste stream is reduced. The Tire Clean Up program also helps to remove unsightly and potentially hazardous material that contributes to the deteriorating conditions of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.

In addition, proceeds from the Tire Round-Up Program are to be used for worthwhile community projects.

Organizations can register by calling Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee at (215) 685-3981 to request an Agreement form. The deadline to register is June 27, while the deadline to return the agreement form is July 3. The following types of organizations can register to participate:

  • Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) Organized Block Clubs
  • Certified Partnership Recycling Groups
  • Friends of the Park
  • Organized Community/Civic Groups
  • Neighborhood NACs
  • Town Watch Organizations
  • Other certified organized groups throughout the City of Philadelphia

In addition to the program, to keep tires from being illegally discarded, the Streets Department will accept a small amount of tires from citizens not registered for the program, although these tires are not eligible for reimbursement. Up to four tires may be brought to one of the Streets Department’s Sanitation Convenience Centers.

Individuals or organizations not registered can report tires in a lot by contacting 3-1-1.  For illegally discarded tires on the street or sidewalk, call the Street Department’s Customer Affairs Office at (215) 686-5560.
