The Stoneleigh Foundation’s Emerging Leader Fellowship places recent college graduates interested in social policy and public service with nonprofits for a one-year period so they can gain leadership experience while implementing innovative solutions to social problems.

The multi-stage application process is about to begin with the approach of the first deadline, October 9, for project abstracts, which are submitted by nonprofits and contain an outline of the project they would like to work on with the fellow. The projects could range from strengthening an organization’s ability to advocate for the well-being of children in foster care to researching best practices on stopping the school to prison pipeline.

The projects must improve outcomes for vulnerable children and youth — the foundation’s core philanthropic goal — and provide fellows with valuable professional experience.  They must also be achievable within a one-year time frame and advance the mission of the nonprofit outside of its daily operations.

Stoneleigh reaches out to its network of universities and other partners to spread the word to recent college students who have received their graduate or undergraduate degree in the last three years. Interested graduates must then apply directly to the nonprofit by November 26, 2014.

The nonprofit and fellow, once matched, work on a more detailed version of the project proposal which then goes to Stoneleigh for final approval.

“The whole spirit of this is to attract and develop young change agents as social justice leaders,” said Brittany Anuszkiewicz, Program Officer at the Stoneleigh Foundation.

“It is their expertise, passion and commitment,” she added, “that will drive the projects.”

More information is available here.  Fellowships will be announced in mid-March and begin July 1, 2015.
