Philadelphia Water Department is Offering Free Rain Barrel Workshops

October 24, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

Together, the Philadelphia Water Department and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) are providing rain barrels, which can be used in order to reduce stormwater flows to the sewer system and creeks, to residents of Philadelphia’s watersheds free of charge.

Rain Barrels are storage containers connected to downspouts (which lead rainwater from the roof to the ground or storm sewer), that capture and store rainwater. Rain barrels can serve many purposes that you would otherwise need tap water for —  gardening, washing down patio furniture, lawn watering, etc.

Rain barrels also decrease the impact of stormwater runoff to streams which helps protect the environment and minimize sewer back ups. The free barrels provided are 55 gallon, recycled, food-grade barrels, and completely sealed so there is no need to worry about mosquitoes

Residents can sign up to participate in a rain barrel workshop (currently listed as being held through December at various locations) to receive one and get a lesson on the installation process and use of the rain barrel. There is also a one-per-household limit.

“The rain barrel workshops are a means to educate Philadelphia homeowners about our 25 year plan, (Green City, Clean Waters), which is a national model for improving water quality in urban streams and rivers,” said Jeanne Waldowski, a program manager at Philadelphia Water Department, in an email. “We also see these workshops as a ‘stepping stone’ to get homeowners involved in caring about their communities and the possibility of implementing more green stormwater infrastructure projects on their properties or in their neighborhoods.”

At the workshops, Philadelphia homeowners learn that by storing rain water during rain events, there is a decreased impact of stormwater runoff on our streams and rivers, making them healthier waterways. They will also learn about Philadelphia Water Department’s Green City, Clean Waters Program, gray vs. green infrastructure, combined and separate sewer systems, and how to care for their rain barrel.

Rain barrel workshops are held in locations around the city throughout the year. Currently there is a list of workshops on Philly Watershed’s website through December. Those interested can also sign up to be notified of upcoming workshops here.
