July 21, 2015 Category: Purpose

Even with the Pope’s visit shutting nearly everything down at the end of September, the annual Park(ing) Day event will continue as planned on September 18, a week before the visit.

This year marks the 8th year of Park(ing) Day, which was created to re-imagine the possibilities of 170 square feet of public space that makes up a parking space. The event celebrates parks and other public spaces in cities across the country and raises awareness of the need for more pedestrian-friendly spaces in urban areas by building parklets in parking spaces throughout the city.

Over the eight years Park(ing) Day has taken place In Philadelphia, almost 300 temporary parks in parking spots have been created by nonprofit institutions, community development organizations, academic institutions, and private companies. The parks have been located all across the city too, in Center City as well as in Manayunk, Southwest Philadelphia, Chinatown, Mount Airy, Northern Liberties, University City, Germantown, West Girard, Fishtown, the Northeast, and Passyunk.

Already this year has a number of participants signed up, including Career Wardrobe, Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, People’s Emergency Center, and more. See a map here.

Sign up to participate in putting together a mini-park during this year’s Park(ing) Day here. The website says they’re looking for people submit parks by mid-August.
