Why it’s so important for youth-focused nonprofits to involve parents

“Around the Corner” is a PhillyCAM show that offers local social impact leaders the opportunity to share what impact their work is having on the Philadelphia area.
Kevin Oberst is the outreach coordinator of the Lenfest Center, a community center that serves K-12 youth and their families in the Hunting Park area. In the past six years, he’s become ingrained in that community.
“We think of each other as family,” he said. “I think that when our youth look back on their childhood, the Lenfest Center is going to be an integral part of that.”
In his Around the Corner interview, Oberst talks with Generocity Community Manager Mo Manklang about why his goal for the youth visiting the center is for them to eventually take his job, why it’s so important to involve parents in their kids’ after-school activities and why nonprofits need to listen to the communities they serve.
PhillyCAM is Comcast channel 66/966HD/967 and Verizon FIOS channel 29/30 in Philadelphia.
