This Interactive Mechanics fellowship is perfect for people of color

The part-time, paid and remote fellowship program is designed to "build capacity for representation and inclusion in the technology field."

Tech has a diversity problem, and Interactive Mechanics wants to do its part to change that with a fellowship designed for anyone underrepresented in tech.

The nine-month fellowship is not only paid and part-time, but accommodates entry and junior-level designers and developers who need to work remotely either because of another job or familial responsibilities.

While people of color and women are especially encouraged to throw their hats in the ring, “anyone is welcome to apply,” said Director of Strategic Initiatives Amelia Longo.

“We’re trying really hard to make this accessible in ways similar programs might not be. There are a lot of awesome programs in the tech world that are totally wonderful and valid but are full-time or unpaid,” Longo said. “Those are issues that narrow who gets to participate.”

Longo said the fellowship is a response to Interactive Mechanics’ team members having participated in fellowship programs and not quite gotten what was promised. So, rather than complain about it, the firm decided to act.

“Doing this will educate us as well,” she said, adding that Interactive Mechanics will be actively looking for feedback on the position.

Applications are due by August 12.
