This is a guest post by RHD's Dia Swan. The city of Brotherly Love is passionate about its community and is always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Philadelphia is rich in history and diversity, but like other major cities, it has a list of social issues — one, of course, being homelessness.
Homelessness is a national issue. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, in Jan. 2015, there were 564,708 people who were experiencing homelessness on any given night. In that year in Philadelphia, 6,500 people experiencing homelessness were served by local outreach organizations.
Though as a city we’ve made strides, such as in lowering veteran homelessness to a functional zero, we still have work to do.
Here at Resources for Human Development (RHD) FaSST/Connections, we work with individuals over the age of 18 who are experiencing mental health disabilities in the shelter system. We use the motto “From shelter to self-sufficiency through strength-based case management.” This means we will walk the path to overcome homelessness no matter the distance. We are not leading the way, but rather are there to help support and guide people on their journey.
RHD FaSST/Connections is a unique program in the way it faces homelessness head on. RHD FaSST/Connections works directly with this population and provides mental health case management services within emergency housing — shelters and safe havens — throughout Philadelphia.
Being a nationally known nonprofit organization working in the human services field, we at FaSST/Connections take great pride in the work we do and stand by RHD’s mission to provide effective, caring and innovative services. We work to empower the individuals and families we serve to help them achieve their highest potential for successful independence within their community.
RHD FaSST/Connections is looking for individuals to join its team to work toward solving homelessness in Philadelphia. Our resource coordinators have the opportunity to advocate for their program participants and help link them to benefits, physical and psychiatric providers, financial stability, housing and so much more.
In this position, individuals will assist in shaping someone’s future by helping create goals and develop ways to reach them by using their supports and the community. They will be able to experience the joy and pride of giving someone the chance at a stable life.
Read the job descriptionIf you have a bachelor’s degree in a human services field; knowledge of homelessness, addictions, residential facilities, mental illnesses and their treatment; and experience in crisis prevention and de-escalation, please consider applying to become a resource coordinator with RHD FaSST/Connections.
