3 Philly nonprofits are fighting for your vote to win $100K

NRG Gives' second play pits Career Wardrobe, DREAM Philadelphia and Friends of the Wissahickon against each other.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that NRG Gives is not an annual program, with multiple awards to be announced per year (5/9, 1:02 p.m.) and to include more details about the Friends of the Wissahickon (5/17, 4:26 p.m.).
Energy retailer NRG’s philanthropic kick continues. (Get it? Kick? Sports? NRG provides energy for the Eagles? Ha.)

Last month, the company announced a new program that lets customers donate part of their bill to one of four local nonprofits.

And it’s been only six months since the organization announced its first NRG Gives campaign. You may recall that this past December, the public voted for Center City hunger nonprofit MANNA to receive the $100,000 prize over Callowhill’s Gift of Life Family House and Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Community Foundation for the Alleghenies.

Now, NRG Gives is back to offer another hundred grand to an area nonprofit. It’s crowdsourcing the winner again, which means if you like any of these three finalists, you should probably vote:

From our Partners

  • Career Wardrobe, the Center City nonprofit/social enterprise that provides professional clothing and services to individuals re-entering the workforce
  • DREAM Philadelphia, the local chapter of a Vermont-based nonprofit that connects underserved youth with mentors and enrichment programs
  • Friends of the Wissahickon, the volunteer-run Chestnut Hill nonprofit that works with Parks and Rec to support and preserve Wissahickon Valley Park

Voting is open from now through Friday, May 19. The winner will be announced the following week. The two runners-up will receive $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.
