A long-awaited craft brewery/social enterprise is getting closer and closer to opening its doors.

We first met Triple Bottom Brewing Co. in November 2016 when the company, started by husband-wife duo Tess Hart and Bill Popwell, announced its plans via an ultimately successful Indiegogo campaign to make both beer and a jobs program for people who have criminal records or are experiencing homelessness.

The name, of course, refers to the company’s commitment to three bottom lines: people (its future staff), planet (it will use water-conscious practices to brew the beer) and profit (the product itself needs to be good).

This week, Triple Bottom’s team announced the next stage of its development: The company and its taproom will be headquartered in the historic Reading Railroad building at 915 Spring Garden St. in Callowhill. They also announced its workforce development partners in Project HOME and PowerCorps PHL.

“I can think of no better place for Triple Bottom Brewing Company to open our doors,” said Hart, a Haverford native, via press release. “The building has a history of bringing together the Philadelphia community and that is exactly what Triple Bottom Brewing Company strives to do.”

The location is a far cry from the initial proposals of Francisville and Point Breeze, but it’s close to a few other breweries (and the future Rail Park) which, as Billy Penn notes, could be a visitor draw. The team offered no estimate for an opening date, but also per Billy Penn, “construction work has begun.” We’ll be eagerly awaiting further updates.
