These are Philadelphia’s 50 biggest nonprofits by income

University of Pennsylvania. August 10, 2018 Category: FeaturedFundingLong
Scale is important for understanding any community.

Philadelphia’s 8,000+ nonprofits vary drastically in size, scope and mission, but some stand way, way apart from the rest. Last year, Generocity published a list of the 25 biggest nonprofits in Philadelphia; this year, we went bigger.

But first, some context:

  • Size doesn’t equal impactNonprofit Center at LaSalle University ED Laura Otten was sure to emphasize this when we sought out her advice ahead of publishing this list: “Bigness doesn’t correlate with effectiveness any more than name recognition does.” After all, big organizations can still fail.
  • But impact is hard to track — And there’s certainly no line for it on the 990. The Pew Fund for Health and Human Services’ new program teaching grantees to track outcomes is just one attempt to to solve for this tricky problem.
  • Several orgs’ tax forms are from 2016 — There’s no truly ideal time to publish this list so its numbers are up-to-date; some nonprofits’ fiscal years correspond with the calendar, but many don’t, and universities, especially, almost never do. Nonprofits may take months (or more) to upload their latest forms. Below, only the orgs with asterisks next to their names have 2017 forms listed — and one, North Philadelphia Health System, comes from 2015.
  • There’s not much variation among the top 25 — As noted last year, Philly is commonly known as an “eds and meds” capital. Still true.
  • The Philadelphia University/Thomas Jefferson University merger didn’t take effect until July 1, 2017 — So the subsequent change in TJU’s income and assets won’t be visible until its 2018 form is released.
  • Reminder — For-profits don’t need to publicly publish their tax forms any more than you, an individual, do. Most nonprofits must.
  • We’ll be following up with a list of these nonprofits’ CEOs and executive directors, and their pay — Because we’re curious, and we know you are, too.

And now, here are the 50 biggest nonprofits incorporated in Philadelphia, according to income and assets and as ranked by nonprofit tax form hub GuideStar:
