This is how much money Philly’s 50 biggest nonprofits’ CEOs make in a year

Dr. Amy Gutmann. September 12, 2018 Category: FeaturedFundingLong
What’s the annual income of your favorite Philadelphia-based nonprofit’s top staffer?

Generocity wrote about CEO salaries this past January and summarized that we’re asking the wrong questions when it comes to nonprofit executive wages. As former reporter Tony Abraham noted at the time about the annual uproar over how much certain directors get paid:

On the surface, the outrage makes a lot of sense. First, unlike for-profit CEOs, salary information for nonprofit executives is easily accessible. And, also unlike for-profits, nonprofits are legally bound by a social mission, so the perceived-to-be-high wages just feel … dirty.

But rather than focus on the people at the top, Abraham wrote, “maybe the more important question is, why shouldn’t entry- and junior-level nonprofit workers be paid wages that are on par with their for-profit colleagues?”

Following our publication of a list of the 50 biggest nonprofits incorporated in Philadelphia according to income, we dove a little deeper into those organizations’ publicly available tax forms (thanks, GuideStar!) to find out how much money their execs earn — not to spark outrage, but to celebrate transparency, and to continue the conversation we started this past winter. (But please, let us know how you feel either way — philly@generocity.org.)

Some notes first:

  • The below income totals include base compensation, plus any listed compensation from related organizations and other compensation.
  • The majority of the following organizations’ tax forms, which are the most recently available on their GuideStar profiles, are from the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Only the orgs with asterisks next to their names have 2017 forms listed — and one, North Philadelphia Health System, comes from 2015 (+).
  • Not every CEO/president/ED/etc. is their org’s highest-paid staffer. Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania Health (#14) Ex-Officio Board Member Ralph Muller, for instance, made $2,622,630.
  • Again, again, again: Most for-profits don’t need to publish their tax forms, so we may never know how the below salaries stack up against them.

Here are the executive salaries listed on the 50 biggest local nonprofits’ most recent tax forms:
