On the market: This is the new normal during COVID-19 and the stay-at-home order

This is not our usual “On the market” posting.

For one thing, while our jobs board still has a number of open positions from before COVID-19 impacted Philadelphia, the ones we’ll be featuring in this edition are those that have been listed after the outbreak and stay-at-home orders were issued here.

That’s also true for the links to other (non-Generocity jobs board) jobs we usually list at the end of the column — we’ll only be posting those that have opened after March 22.

But, of course, the real difference between this “On the market” and those that preceded it, is the frightening impact of COVID-19 on jobs.

We’ve seen local nonprofits have to furlough staff to keep services available; read how nonprofits can use the federal COVID-19 relief laws to stay operational; seen how funds and foundations are scrambling to make things better for their grantees, and witnessed the deployment of the large, rapid-response PHL COVID-19 fund to help nonprofits survive and adapt to exponentially increased needs.

So, perhaps we can glean our first wholly positive news on the jobs front from the fact that social enterprises and nonprofits large and small are still hiring. It speaks of their promise, and hope, and determination for the future.

And as nonprofit pros looking here for your next opportunity, we applaud you for those same qualities.

The Monkey and The Elephant, Philadelphia’s first and only nonprofit coffee shop with a focus on employing foster youth while providing them with the support they need to transition to healthy adulthood, is looking for an executive director.

The executive director is responsible for the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and managing The Monkey & The Elephant, and  under the guidance of, and in collaboration with, the board of directors, to further advance M&E’s mission, impact, and funding.

The active and committed volunteer board of directors is seeking a strong leader who is passionate about providing professional growth opportunities to foster youth, as well as further scaling the impact of its cafe and program operations through additional funding and cultivation of relationships with multiple stakeholders.


Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence has an opening for an HR director. This individual in this position is a strategic business partner to senior leadership on a variety of issues, including leadership development and talent management. They will cultivate relationships to ensure that HR delivers value, service excellence and operational efficiency. They must be a deft communicator, fostering respect, trust, and collaboration among team members, and possess the ability to manage through change with flexibility and poise.

The organization is looking for someone who demonstrates leadership, dedication, and an interpersonal savvy that helps establish effective relationships and an appropriate rapport with people. Accordingly, the description states: “Our best employees 1) set the bar high 2) are intentional and thoughtful about their choices 3) collaborate as a means to community solutions 4) are positive, can-do, and solution-oriented 5) embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, and 6) are accountable and get it done.”
