Heather Eicher-Miller is a nutrition epidemiologist focused on solving the problem of U.S. food insecurity which affected 11% of U.S. households in 2019 and creates uncertainty regarding the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods. Her research has documented immediate and chronic adverse dietary and health outcomes associated with food insecurity. Her work to evaluate and create evidence-based interventions, programs, and policies has reduced food insecurity and improved access to resources which enhance health. Eicher-Miller has received numerous awards for her research. Among them, the prestigious national award, the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) 2019 Mead Johnson Award, the only major ASN award for a young investigator over all areas of nutrition. As an educator, Eicher-Miller disseminates nutrition education to food assistance providers throughout Indiana. She is also engaged in teaching students across health sciences, dietetics, and public health disciplines along with actively mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research. As a member of the scientific community, Eicher-Miller is involved in national and international nutrition societies. She is currently holds a leadership position in the American Society of Nutrition, scientifically advises for the National Dairy Council, and reviews grants for USDA.
