Job Description

We are seeking a senior operations leader with a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in a comparably complex leadership position, who holds an advanced degree in organizational development or a similar field, or whose professional trajectory reflects equivalent professional achievement. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of internal systems management, strategic planning and change leadership.  They will have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a belief in social change. Experience in nonprofit financial systems and operations, and familiarity with the political and cultural dynamics of the City of Philadelphia is highly advantageous.

 

Professional Characteristics: Required / Desired Skills

  1. An advanced degree in organizational development or a similar field, or a professional trajectory that reflects equivalent professional achievement
  2. Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible management experience in a matrixed organization, preferably non-profit/social impact-oriented
  3. Outstanding supervisory and leadership skills, proven track record of internal systems management, strategic planning and change leadership in a complex nonprofit setting
  4. Strong financial oversight and budgeting skills
  5. Effective communicator and collaborator with colleagues with a broad range of working and learning styles
  6. Ability to navigate legal and risk management matters
  7. Familiarity with digital asset management and data analysis tools to optimize operations
  8. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  9. Interest/experience in the arts and culture/social change sector 
  10. Familiarity with the political and cultural dynamics of the City of Philadelphia is highly advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

Management & Executive Leadership:

  • Advance organizational mission in collaboration with board and staff
  • Oversee daily operations and establish systems, policies and practices that are aligned with the core values of the organization
  • Hire, oversee and work closely with the Director of Human Resources to develop, implement and apply best practices
  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts and collaborate with key stakeholders
  • Represent the Executive Director and the organization at City and Board levels

Operations:

  • Provide leadership in best practice research and legal document oversight
  • Oversee risk management, insurance matters, and metric development
  • Manage maintenance of headquarters and spaces across the city

Financial Oversight:

  • Lead the Finance department and manage budget and expenses in close collaboration with other relevant leader
  • Manage relationships and build partnerships with partners/vendors/external stakeholders 
  • Create and revise reports to key stakeholders of the organization 
  • Oversee the creation of City reports and budgeting documents

 

Compensation: 

$130,000 – $140,000 annually. Benefits include competitive holiday, health, and dental benefits.

Organizational Information/Reporting Structure:

The COO is the “Number Two” in the organization and reports directly to the Executive Director.  The COO works closely with the Executive and Leadership teams, and interacts regularly with the Board of Directors.  The COO oversees five leadership-level direct reports:  the Senior Director of Finance, the Directors of Human Resources,  Project Management, and Operations & Crew, and two additional office administrator roles.

Relevant Financial Information: 

MAP has an annual operating budget of roughly $16-18M.  It has 57-60 full-time, 100+ part-time, and 10 city employees.
