Wind Power Company Clean Currents Shuts Down

January 31, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

The Maryland-based wind power company Clean Currents is no longer in operation. All current customers will be returned to their utility service immediately, according to an automatic message from the company.

The Green Philly Blog reported that the company was unable to handle the spike in electrical prices caused by the Polar Vortex. Generocity has not yet confirmed this.

Clean Currents established offices in Philadelphia in January 2013.  The Philadelphia office was its only presence outside of Maryland. The company was certified by B Lab and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council.

In Philadelphia, Clean Currents was more than a power company. It also engaged the community through programs such as the Lots of Power initiative, which partnered students with architects and designers to create new uses for Philadelphia’s vacant lots.

It also maintained a robust online presence with the Clean Currents blog and a social media avatar called @GreenPhillyDave that served as the company’s voice on sustainability issues.
