The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy is looking for a fresh new perspective on adult literacy programs.
The Commission, which has recently gotten significant recognition, will host Tutor Institute 2015 on October 24. Between now and August 17, it is seeking proposals to present dynamic workshops that will help tutors and mentors to better work with adult literacy learners and out-of-school youth ages 16 and up.
The goal is for participants to walk away with the tools needed to ensure that adult learners reach their goals of passing the GED ® , improving English language skills, entering into post-secondary training, and/or securing employment opportunities.
Each 90 minute session is meant to focus on one or two objectives. The Commission is looking for interactive and hands-on workshops that address at least one of the following topics:
- Strategies to use when working with low-level learners
- Tools and resources to support adult learners with learning difficulties
- How learners’ career pathways could inform instruction
- Helping learners become career and college ready
- Integrating technology in instruction
- Motivating and retaining adult learners
- Helping Tutors and Mentors become reflective practitioners
- Creative instructional techniques such as drama-based instruction and the like
Priority will be given to proposals that are practice-based and participant-centered. Applications are due Monday, August 17.
