There is no clear consensus, no playbook for Philly nonprofits to follow in the event of public controversy and scandal, but maybe there should be.

"It is so important for local artists of all mediums to spread these strong messages," says Sabirah Mahmud, a member of the STAMP Teen Council, and Global Climate Strike activist.

"It’s a way to go into communities, meet them where they are, invite them into the museum, and then encourage them to come back," says Ana Gamboa, the museum's special project coordinator.

Syrian-born artist Issam Kourbaj needs help to build all those boats in an upcoming community art event on Sept. 17, which will mark 2,379 days that have passed since the beginning of the Syrian civil war.
