Red Paw Emergency Relief Team’s Jen Leary is a CNN Hero

April 15, 2014 Category: Uncategorized

What happens to pets and other animals when disaster strikes?

The Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, founded by Jennifer Leary and based in South Philadelphia, is like the American Red Cross for pets. They arrive and assist pets and their owners when disaster strikes.

Leary was featured as a CNN Hero this past Friday.

“I’ve been watching CNN Heroes for forever,” Leary said. “I went back and looked at the some past recipients and they’re all doing amazing work. To be in that category is pretty mind-blowing.”

Red Paw works in conjunction with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross and other organizations in order to provide emergency transport, shelter, and veterinary care to animals involved in residential fires and other disasters 24/7, 365 days a year, free of charge to the pet owners.

Leary said that Red Paw primarily survives on individual donations and that they’ve received a few small grants (including a Disaster Supply grant from Animal Lifeline and American Kennel Club Canine Support and Relief Fund). But because Red Paw is less than three years old, she added, they haven’t been able to secure the funding they need to expand Red Paw.

“Having this national exposure, it means everything to Red Paw,” she said. “We really needed this right now.”
