Roots Philly Yoga to Offer Free Yoga to Recovering Homeless

August 3, 2015 Category: Purpose

Roots Philly Yoga, located at 9th and Spring Garden Streets, was created based on the idea a group of people practicing yoga together could be instrumental in the shaping of a neighborhood. According to its website, Roots Philly Yoga and the Philly Yoga Project were created by Erik and Lauren Burling as a platform for cooperation, collaboration and community.

“In trying to create that ‘unique’ studio we were looking for we simply asked ourselves ‘What are we good at? What comes natural to us?'” Erik Burling said. “And for me, that was working with the homeless population who have a history of drug/alcohol addiction. For Lauren, who works full time as a Social Worker, it was simply helping other people.”

Roots Philly Yoga’s Philly Yoga Project will host yoga classes that are offered for men and women who are homeless, or who are recovering homeless and are active in a recovery program. Its inaugural classes will be offered on August 10 and September 14.

The Philly Yoga Project is also open to employees who support the homeless, the social workers and program advocates that help them in the community, and individuals who are/have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives.

“The free recovery classes are open to all people, added Erik Burling. “Those in recovery, those who work with people who in recovery, those with family members in recovery, or just those who don’t mind being in a yoga class absent of any sort of social labeling. Yoga means union, in this case we’re all one people trying to heal together.”
Those interested can RSVP names of participants for August by Friday, August 7 to info@rootsphillyyoga.com.
