Around the Corner” is a PhillyCAM show that offers local social impact leaders the opportunity to share what impact their work is having on the Philadelphia area.

Food Connect Group is tackling the city’s hunger problem one app download at a time.

“We essentially look to bridge the gap between surplus food and hunger” in three ways, said founder Megha Kulshreshtha:

  1. By leveraging technology — It’s easy-to-use smartphone app lets restaurants and other orgs with leftover food hook up with human services nonprofits looking for donations.
  2. By optimizing resources — Volunteers, from drivers to campus reps at local universities, pitch in to transfer that food, thus reducing waste that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
  3. By reducing barriers to donationFood Connect has donors sign waivers to eliminate their liability. The org is also an LLC.

According to Kulshreshtha, her team facilitated the donation of over 11,000 pounds of food and over 9,000 meals across eight days around the DNC this July.

“It was all hands on deck. It was beautiful. It was awesome,” she shared during her “Around the Corner” interview with Generocity Community Manager Mo Manklang.
