The Resource Exchange Set to Expand to New Location

The Resource Exchange, started in 2009, accepts and resells waste materials created by the arts and entertainment sectors. This includes art supplies, home improvement materials, film/theatrical props, and other materials.

With a growing stash of reusable materials, the organization is moving from its current location in Port Richmond to a larger location at 2nd and Cecil B. Moore.

“We’ve been saving an ever increasing variety of creative and adaptive reuse materials for makers, designers, and builders of all types, and the more we recovered, the more we felt the constraints of our square footage,”  Executive Director Karyn Gerred said.

Access to public transit was also a factor in the move. The new location is just three blocks from the Berks Station of the Market-Frankford Line, and Kensington, Fishtown and Northern Liberties each host a number of artistic communities.

Gerred explained that accessibility to a mix of donors and buyers is crucial to making The Resource Exchange the “go to” hub for reclaimed materials from the arts and entertainment sectors.

“The diverse mixture of artistic and commercial activity that creative reuse generates will encourage more pedestrian activity on an underutilized northern section of 2nd Street in Kensington, and the building itself has great potential to become a more welcoming space for our customers,” Gerred said.
