When people speak up about neighborhood issues in wealthy neighborhoods, the City resolves them. But in the Kensington area, residents say, the City forces them to wait for solutions.

Nourish grew out of Sunday Suppers’ need to pivot in response to the pandemic, where holding in-person, weekly family meals was no longer viable.

"We will continue applying pressure until this station is reopened and until residents are properly at the table with decision-making power about the future of this community," said NKCDC Executive Director Dr. Bill McKinney.

The organizations hope to create “a place-based, collective service delivery model” to create the ultimate in coordination — one-stop shopping to tackle poverty.

“We need to develop systems to ensure warm and effective connectivity between the free tax prep and the comprehensive set of public benefits, subsidies, supports, and resources," says Will Gonzalez, executive director of Ceiba.

Generocity contributor Brandon Dorfman looks at some the root causes of poverty in Kensington, and at the limitations of, and challenges to, poverty alleviation efforts that have been deployed in the neighborhood in the past.

The Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations released a report in October examining the economic impact of local community development corporations.

During October, National Federation of the Blind chapters across the country will host outreach events and fundraisers with the mission of breaking down misconceptions about the blind. The Keystone chapter event is Oct. 17.
