Congregation Rodeph Shalom Partners with The Food Trust for a New Farmers Market
July 11, 2014 Category: UncategorizedCongregation Rodeph Shalom, in partnership with The Food Trust, opened a new farmers’ market at Broad and Mt. Vernon streets — where the congregation is located — on June 29. The farmers’ market, which will be open every Sunday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. through the fall, will feature regional farmers and other local food providers. The market will offer affordable, farm-fresh food to synagogue members and residents of the surrounding community at the farmers’ market.
The farmers’ market aims to increase access to nutritious food, promote healthy habits and for the market to serve as a social gathering place to bring together synagogue members and the local neighborhood.
“I think many will travel here to the farmers’ market, [including] neighbors from all walks of life, regardless of income and background,” said Rodeph Shalom Rabbi Eli C. Freedman in a press release. “Farmers’ markets are about the food, but also about so much more.”
The market will also accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers, and Philly Food Bucks.
The farmers’ market’s opening celebration will be this Sunday, July 13, and will feature music, kids’ activities, health screenings and cooking demonstrations:
