Omar Woodard is mulling a run for Congress

The twinkling lights of political aspiration haven’t dimmed for Omar Woodard.

The nonprofit leader is considering challenging Bob Brady, a long-tenured U.S. representative and the head of Philly’s Democratic party, for his seat, reports Philadelphia magazine.

As Generocity noted last February, the North Philly native and hip-hop fan had been six months into a run for a state senatorial seat when he instead elected to head up the Philadelphia chapter of venture philanthropy firm GreenLight Fund.

When asked at the time if a future run was out of the question, he said:

“What’s on my mind right now is raising money to make sure we can continue to invest in high performing organizations that want to end poverty in Philadelphia. That’s my focus right now.”

GreenLight currently invests in Parent-Child Home Program (which expanded to more Philly ZIP codes this January), Year Up, Center for Employment Opportunities and Single Stop USA.

Woodard did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday morning. In a statement to Philly mag, he said, “If we want better government, we have to elect better leaders. I’ll make a decision in the next few weeks after talking with close friends and family.”
