The Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Philadelphia Chapter (AFP-GPC) celebrated National Philanthropy Day last week by handing out awards to local leaders, fundraisers, philanthropists and volunteers.

Similar events all over the country celebrated the integral role of philanthropy by highlighting newcomers, long-time philanthropic leaders, and a mix of representatives from foundations, corporations and large and small nonprofits.

In Greater Philadelphia, AFP-GPC aims to promote high ethical standards and effectiveness in the philanthropic community.

“This is our first year offering the educational session preceding the actual luncheon. We think this added an extra benefit to the attendees who are looking for more education about fundraising and development in general,” said Debra Shupp, associate director of development of AFP-GCP.

Shupp added that the philanthropist of the year, Phillip B. Lindy, accepted the award shortly before his death. Mr. Lindy was known for his work with Drexel University’s Center for Civic Engagement, which was renamed in his honor. His children received the award for him at the ceremony.
