Despite losing a high-profile supporter in former Philadelphia Eagle Connor Barwin, energy retailer NRG has nonetheless been on a roll with new giveback programs.

The company launched a new corporate philanthropy program late last year that allows customers to vote on a select number of nonprofits to receive a $100,000 donation. Tonight at Lincoln Financial Field, NRG is unveiling a program that the company hopes will serve as a more consistent source of support through its customers.

The program, called Choose to Give, allows customers to contribute one percent of the energy supply portion of their bills annually to one of the following nonprofits, picked by the customer:

  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  • DuPont Hospital for Children
  • Big Brothers, Big Sisters
  • Philabundance

That’s on top of an initial contribution of $50.

The new program is “unique to our region,” according to the company’s public relations manager Dave Schrader. Schrader added that the company has already signed up “hundreds of customers” under the Choose to Give program.

Plus, Eagles tight end Trey Burton will be at the unveiling tonight in Barwin’s stead (though not as an official NRG rep). Maybe not as high-profile, but hey, he’s young yet. Maybe he’ll get there.
