Youth activists are looking to build a greenhouse in Norris Square Neighborhood Project
July 9, 2015 Category: Funding, PurposeNorris Square Neighborhood Project is looking to build a greenhouse that would increase fresh food access for community members and help youth learn about organic farming, seed germination and saving, and other concepts associated with urban gardening, nutrition, and sustainability.
Since the early 1970s, Norris Square Neighborhood Project has helped neighborhood youth become community environmental stewards. Grupo Motivos, a female collective of Puerto Rican community activists, first created six gardens on vacant land in the community to create spaces of beauty for the community and to process community trauma related to violence and the drug trade in the 1980s.
The greenhouse project will partner youth activists with community members and staff to create a passive solar greenhouse and will connect community members of different generations. The project will extend help to extend the Norris Square Neighborhood Project’s growing season, which will help them provide more fresh produce in its community and help to address health issues connected to nutrition and food access.
Norris Square Neighborhood Project is running a fundraising campaign that ends today, July 9, on HIPGive, a crowdfunding platform for Latino-led, Latino-serving organizations.
