College clubs in Philly are using a restaurant app to fund themselves

Student clubs on college campuses have found a way to pad both their bellies and pockets with an app.

GroupRaise, an app that gives users the ability to turn regular social gatherings into fundraisers, is becoming something of a hit at local colleges, according to a story in Penn’s Daily Pennsylvanian.

The app allows users to schedule meals at participating restaurants, which then donate a portion of the sales to a nonprofit or social cause of the users’ choice. As long as clubs are registered as nonprofits under their respective university, those donations can be made to — well, themselves.

According to the story, a number of clubs at Penn (such as Penn Colleges Against Cancer and Penn Taiwanese Society), Temple University and Drexel University are using the app to turn ordinary social events into socially conscious events and self-funding mechanisms.

All while patronizing local businesses. Isn’t that appetizing? (So sorry).
